project 01 :: research

It has been fascinating researching the inspiration behind the typeface Montserrat.

Designer Julieta Ulanovsky lives and works in Buenos Aires. She launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund this project in 2011 and since then has created multiple different varieties of the font.

She says that her typeface was inspired by the signage found throughout the historical neighborhood of Montserrat, Buenos Aires – one of the oldest neighborhoods in the country!

According to Ulanovsky,
"The old posters and signs in this place inspired me to design a typeface that rescues the beauty of urban typography from the first half of the twentieth century. The goal is to rescue what is in Montserrat and set it free, under a free, libre and open source license, the SIL Open Font License. As urban development changes this place, it will never return to its original form and loses forever the designs that are so special and unique."

Therefore, I want to draw upon the vibrant historical and cultural aspects of this font that is derived from urban signage through the use of color in my poster and book design.
